Why You Need a Privacy Policy for Shopify

How to Add These Policies to Shopify
Adding your generated policy to Shopify takes under a minute. Shopify ships a dedicated Policies section that automatically links your policies into the checkout footer and order confirmation emails.
- In your Shopify admin, open Settings → Policies.
- In this generator, click Copy on your Privacy Policy.
- Paste the HTML into the Privacy policy text box in Shopify.
- Repeat for Terms of Service and Refund Policy, then click Save.
- Shopify automatically displays these links at checkout and in order emails.
Note: Shopify requires a Refund Policy to be visible during checkout. Setting it under Settings → Policies satisfies this requirement across all Shopify themes.
Shopify-Specific Compliance Notes
- Shopify checkout already includes a built-in cookie consent banner, but your Privacy Policy must still disclose how Shopify Analytics and payment gateways (Shopify Payments, Shop Pay, PayPal, Stripe) process customer data.

Does Shopify automatically show my policies at checkout?
Yes. Once you paste your policies into Settings → Policies, Shopify adds them to the checkout footer and links them from order confirmation emails automatically. You do not need to edit your theme.
Is Shopify's built-in cookie banner enough for GDPR?
Shopify's banner covers basic consent collection, but full GDPR compliance still requires a Privacy Policy disclosing each payment processor (Shopify Payments, PayPal, Stripe, etc.) and how long you retain order data. Your generated policy already includes these clauses.
Where does Shopify require the Refund Policy to appear?
